Global Climate Strike: #PeopleNotProfit!
September 23 marks the Global Climate Strike.
CUPW endorses the strike organizers’ demand that policymakers and world leaders prioritize #PeopleNotProfit!
Governments must listen to MAPA (Most Affected Peoples and Areas) voices and immediately work to provide meaningful financial support to the communities most affected by the climate crisis, from flooded villages in Pakistan to drought-stricken communities in East Africa.
The Global Strike, that began with 15-year-old Greta Thunberg striking every Friday in the streets of Sweden has exploded across more than 185 Countries. Originally a youth/student movement, climate strikes are a powerful demand for more action to cut emissions and stabilise the climate.
The Problem
As the Global Climate Strike reminds us, climate struggle is class struggle.
Corporations destroy the earth and its occupants with no remorse. They deliberately sacrifice the Global South’s ecosystem and peoples for their so-called “development” and everlasting “economic growth”. Meanwhile, the working class is used as a tool to build this destructive system.
Together, let’s build a system and home where we prioritize #PeopleNotProfit.
What We Must Do
We must continue to build union power in the very energy system that needs to be transformed. Winning the climate struggle will require working class solidarity with other marginalized groups.
Take Action
Bold action is needed, and there are many ways for members to support the Climate Strike:
- join a local climate action group,
- sign petitions,
- organize a climate talk in your community,
- join 350.org, and
- support worker demands for Just transition, like our very own vision of a public post office in Delivering Community Power.
With your Local, join one of the rallies planned for the week of September 19 in your community (a list of planned actions can be found here: Fridays For Future – Map of Climate Striking and Actions
