New CUPW Logo For Pride 2016

June 23, 2016

Following a recommendation from the LGBTQ working group, CUPW has prepared a new logo to highlight our support for Pride 2016.

Logo: LGBTQ CUPW-STTP

As recent events in Orlando, Florida, have underscored, homophobia, transphobia and violence towards the LGBTQ community is sadly ongoing.

In Canada, police-reported crimes motivated by sexual orientation have gone up.

Statistics Canada reports that hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ community were more likely to be violent than hate crimes targeting other groups and that, from 2010 to 2013, two-thirds of these hate crimes involved violent offences. While most of this violence targets males and youth, trans people and racialized people are overrepresented among victims of violence.

Many of these crimes go unreported.

CUPW stands in solidarity with Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transsexual-Transgender-Queer struggles for human rights. Pride events began as an expression of the fight for dignity and equality — a refusal to be silenced.

Together we remember the victims of hate crime and violence. Together we make it better.

Please also help distribute our LGBTQ working group’s Together we make it better video – CUPW’s contribution to the “#itgetsbetter” project. You can simply retweet it from the @cupw Twitter feed, or share it from YouTube.

In Solidarity,

Jan Simpson
1st National Vice-President (2015-2019)

Dave Bleakney
2nd National Vice-President (2015-2023)
